Bringing a new puppy into your home for the first time is usually a joyous occasion with everyone oohing and awing over the puppy until their first accident occurs. Unfortunately, most puppies do not come housebroken which means that once you set aside how cute your new best friend is you will have to make a conscious effort to housebreak them before your home and patience is ruined. The good news is that if you choose to use dog training pads the process is much easier and your home will be much more protected.
When it comes to learning how to housebreak a dog with dog training pads the first thing that you need to understand is that it will still take time and that you need to be patient. Along the way your puppy is likely going to make a few mistakes which will require a consistent firm tone of voice followed by a discipline. A simple tough ‘No’ is usually enough to make a point with a small puppy much like it is with a toddler, only in the puppies case after you catch their accident you should pick them up and place them on the dog pads so that they learn the correct behavior.
On the flip side of the coin, a great deal of the time your puppy will make it onto the dog training pads once they comprehend what they are there for. Every time that you see your dog use the dog training pads or go outdoors you should praise them repeatedly going so far as to offer them a treat and plenty of pets. Dogs are obedient animals that only want to please their masters, thus teach them what you appreciate and they will eventually learn how to follow your commands. It may seem repetitive, but if you keep a consistent training attitude it is possible to housebreak your new pup within just three to four weeks.
These tips aside, there are a few basics to keep in mind when it comes to using the dog training pads. The first is that you need to put them down in an area where your pet understands. Most pets will choose an area away from where they sleep and people travel to relieve themselves due to their natural instinct. Thus, your puppy will probably already have their location chosen before you unless you put the dog training pads down right away. For the first days use the location your pet has chosen to teach them the meaning of the pads.
Once they start to understand that the dog training pads are where they are supposed to do their business and continue to use them on a regular basis without too many incidents you can slowly start to move the pads closer to the door. Remember that your end goal is not to train them to use the pads, but to train them to go outdoors thus you will slowly want to move the pads towards the exit of the home where your pet is supposed to relieve themselves.
Gradually the pet will begin to understand that they are meant to use the outdoors if you continue to take them out and praise them each time they correctly relieve their bowels. Although your dog will likely enjoy the treats they get along the way from you as you teach them, the largest reward of your efforts will be that within a month’s time if you have stayed consistent you will no longer need to worry about accidents or damage within the home.
