Japanese food culture

Jacob Binney, September 20, 2023September 20, 2023

Fundamentally based on rice, whose cultivation began to be developed 2,000 years ago , and which during the 6th century increased thanks to the introduction of Buddhism Japanese restaurant, which involved the creation of laws and imperial edicts that gradually prohibited the consumption of both animal and meat. like birds.

By the 15th century, vegetarian cuisine ( shoji ryori or honzen ryori ) was already popular, it was promoted by the Zen sect, and later ingredients that are currently part of the country’s culture began to appear , such as soy (shoyu) , miso or tofu . Along with the vegetarian cooking style, it is worth adding two more, which are chakaiseki ryori (very formal as it is the tea ceremony) and kaiseki ryori (associated with meals but with a more relaxed atmosphere).

At meals, sake is served as the main drink , which is made from rice . By custom, the Japanese do not eat rice while drinking it and that is why the dishes that contain it are served at the end.

There is an established order to serve food :

  • Appetizers.
  • Sashimi (slices of raw fish).
  • Suimono (light soup).
  • Yakimono (grilled foods).
  • Mushimono (steamed meals).
  • Nimono (boiled foods).
  • Aemono (dressed foods such as salad).
  • Miso soup.
  • Tsukemono (pickles).
  • Rice.
  • Japanese sweets and fruit.
  • Tea ends the meal.

Another important element of Japanese food is sushi , which emerged in the 19th century in Edo , the current city of Tokyo (1603–1868), which was sold in stalls and were the main precursors of specialized restaurants.

If we take some relevant data , such as the number of Japanese restaurants established outside the country, there are around 30,000 (approximately 14,000 in America, 10,000 in Asia and about 2,500 in Europe). Despite this number of establishments, only 10% of the owners are Japanese.

Despite the general image that Japanese cuisine is full of complicated and difficult-to-make recipes , today we show you 10 simple step-by-step recipes to cook at home and surprise your loved ones with 2 starters, 2 main dishes, 4 of sushi and 2 desserts taken from the Japanese Recipes website .
